Different strokes
Willis talkin’ about the new, cut Grass

The members of East Coast band The Grass have more in common with their ’60s role models than the inventive musical style and eclectic fashions. Add low- or no-paying jobs, commune living and recreational drug use, followed by friction and break-ups, reformation and a rumoured reunion tour, and it’s clearly a reputation they come by easily.

The story goes that the Grass’s original sextet uprooted from Dartmouth in winter 2007 to a house in Ottawa South so they could plug their alt-country hippy rock into the Ottawa music scene. Read more…

THE O-TOWN HOEDOWN:
Not Bad Country for Good Men and Women

Like a rhinestone cowboy, local gem Greg Harris corrals a star-studded line up for fans and bands alike at the annual O-Town Hoedown

Ask people what kind of music they like and what’s the standard reply? Anything but country!

Yet, judging by the Ottawa crowds that cram into bars when cultural export Kathleen Edwards drives into town, as Blue Rodeo annually take their post at Bluesfest or when Alberta’s Corb Lund and Tim Hus sell out Barrymore’s, the country music vibe clicks with Ottawans always spurring them into high gear and cheer. Add to that the number of heads at Fiftymen, Slo’ Tom or Lucky Ron shows and you’ll see that Capital City has enough country fans – and bands – to fill several barns over.

It’s no wonder then that this year’s O-Town Hoedown has exploded from two days into seven, spanning as many venues from August 17-23. Read more…

When it comes to rock and roll, many bands play it but few can stage it. “Some guys may sound good, but do they look cool on stage?” asks Watters Brothers Rebellion frontman Muddy.

“Do they stand still on stage? Do they look like nerds? Are they dressing up? Are they choreographing something, or are they up there plugging in their guitars and talking to their buddies in the front row? It’s about putting on a professional show that compares with major acts. That’s where our attitude is when it comes to music.
The Bible All-Stars can go all night long

“I challenge you to find a drummer who will go like that for an entire show,” says lead singer/guitarist Morgan Friend. He’s boasting of his bandmate’s (Tim Connolly) fiery and fervent drum frenzy for Ottawa’s high-octane, alt-country/punk band The Bible All-Stars. Read more…

Ottawa’s alt-country rockers Bible All-Stars are the next big thing for Capital City, rocking raucous about booze, bars and bygone babes in biblical proportions.

God love a band who can turn misery and gin into a viable recreation.

Much loved by country fans of old-school Hank Williams and Merle Haggard, to Supersuckers and psychobilly, these seasoned locals (Greg, Joel, Tim and Morgan) give ‘er when you need ‘er and are sure to have rockers, punks and hillbillys congregating en masse, hankering for this hometown honky tonk.

UPCOMING SHOWS:
September 8: Dominion Tavern CD LAUNCH with Lucky Ron and Lefty
October 6: Irene’s with Lefty McRighty/Crowded Skies

High Times

The Grass’s third album channels ’60s spirit

If Value Village had a house band, The Grass would be it. The band’s third album, Report All Ghosts, is a throwback to the ’60s, which could surely score regular rotation on classic rock station CHEZ 106.1′s Psychedelic Rock Weekends.

Still in their early 20s, The Grass come by the ’60s vibe honestly. Read more…

OPENING BAND was The Brothers Chaffey and a must-see. Pick up their album, Harbord Street Soul. Phenomenal.
