VOLUNTEERING: reading to kids to improve literacy and learning

LIFE-LONG LOVE OF LEARNING!

I’m blessed & fortunate to have completed my training last evening with minibiblioPLUS in Montreal to learn about the non-profit organization, and to get ready to … read to babies and kids!

Their mandate: “To raise literacy levels by empowering partners to instil in children a life-long love of reading and learning from birth and to enable free access to books and animation services.”

The Volunteer Coordinator who guided us through the info-session was nothing shy of amazing – energizing and educating us four new volunteers about how to bring books to life!

From helping babies put their wee hands on their first books to bringing stories alive for kids while engaging them through animated storytelling to live their own stories through encouraged shares and caring, I’ll be joining other minibiblioPLUS volunteers as we help raise literacy levels in fun and lively ways.

So grateful for my sabbatical year working as a Public Information Officer at Ottawa Public Library (OPL) back in the day, which immersed me in libraries and their magnificent staff, books and literacy – it’s great to be back in this world!

Here are the books I’ll be working with! Drop your suggestions in the Comments, and tell me about your city’s initiatives!
